Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to the questions we hear most — about materials, construction, sizing, care, and ordering.
Products & Materials
Are your rugs handmade?
Yes. Every Folia Living rug is woven by hand by skilled artisans in India. Depending on the construction method and size, a single rug can take weeks or months to complete.
What materials do you use?
Our rugs are made in wool, sisal, polypropylene, and recycled P.E.T. Our throws are cashmere and wool, milled in Italy. Our decorative pillows and drapery are made in the USA using designer-grade fabrics.
What is recycled P.E.T.?
The texture is often mistaken for wool — but P.E.T. stands for polyethylene terephthalate, a recycled polyester made from post-consumer plastic bottles. It's UV-stable, easy to clean, and non-chemically treated. It performs well in high-traffic areas and is an excellent choice for kids' rooms, family rooms, and anywhere pets spend time.
What's the difference between polypropylene and recycled P.E.T.?
Both are synthetic performance fibers — stain-resistant, UV-resistant, and easy to clean. Polypropylene handles direct sun especially well and is suited for uncovered outdoor use. Recycled P.E.T. is made from recycled plastic bottles, making it the more eco-conscious choice, and works well for covered outdoor areas and high-traffic indoor spaces. Both are handwoven in India and care for identically.
What rug material is best for my space?
Wool is soft, durable, and naturally stain-resistant — a strong choice for living rooms, bedrooms, and kids' rooms. Sisal and natural fiber rugs are ideal for high-traffic areas and work well as a foundation layer. Performance rugs in polypropylene or recycled P.E.T. are built for real use: kitchens, mudrooms, family rooms, patios, and anywhere kids or pets are involved. For stairs, we recommend wool or sisal — polypropylene is too slippery for runners, and jute is difficult to clean on a stair.
Are your products responsibly made?
Yes. Our rugs are handwoven in solar-powered facilities in India using sustainable materials and fair labor practices. Our recycled P.E.T. rugs are made from post-consumer plastic bottles. Wool is a natural, biodegradable fiber.
Construction
What are the different rug construction methods?
Folia Living rugs are made using four techniques. Hand-hooked rugs pull yarn through a backing with a hook, creating a looped, high-profile surface. Hand-tufted rugs follow the same process but are sheared flat for an even pile. Handwoven flatweaves interlace warp and weft threads on a flat loom for a smooth, reversible surface. Hand-knotted rugs are the most labor-intensive — individual knots tied one at a time on a vertical loom, resulting in exceptional durability and detail.
Why do new rugs shed?
Initial shedding is normal in hooked and tufted rugs as cut fibers work their way to the surface. New wool rugs also shed during a break-in period of up to six months. Both decrease over time — extra vacuuming in the first few months helps manage it.
New wool rugs may also have a faint natural odor when first unpacked. This is normal and dissipates within a few days of airing out.
What should I do if a loop pops up on my hooked rug?
Trim it with scissors. Don't pull it. As a hooked rug settles, a stray loop may surface from time to time — this is normal and easy to manage.
How much size variation should I expect?
Because our rugs are handmade, slight size variation is inherent to the process. Tolerances vary by construction method and size. The tables below show the expected range by construction type.

Swatches
Do you offer swatches?
Yes — for most products. Swatches are available for rugs, decorative pillows, and drapery. Throws do not have swatches. Where swatches are available, they are listed as a size option directly on the product page.
How do I order a swatch?
Swatches are ordered directly from the product page. Where available, swatch is listed as a size option alongside the standard sizes — just select it and add to cart like any other product. There's no separate process.
Care
How do I clean a performance rug?
Vacuum regularly — beater bar is fine. For spills, blot with mild soap and water. Indoor/outdoor styles can be hosed down for a deeper clean. Most polypropylene and recycled P.E.T. styles are bleach-safe.
How do I care for a wool rug?
Vacuum with suction only — no beater bar. For spills, blot immediately with cold water and a small amount of unscented clear soap. Never rub. Professional hand-wash is recommended periodically.
How do I store a rug?
Roll the rug face side out and store in an airtight plastic bag in a dry area. Consider desiccants to control moisture. Never fold — folding creates permanent creases.
Ordering
Is there a minimum order?
No. There is no opening order minimum and no reorder minimum.
What payment methods do you accept?
We accept Visa, Mastercard, and American Express.
Do you offer custom sizes or special orders?
We do not currently offer custom sizes or special orders. All available sizes are listed on individual product pages.
Shipping & Returns
Where do orders ship from?
Most orders ship from our warehouse in Fort Mill, SC. Select rug styles ship from Louisville, KY.
What are your shipping timelines?
Most orders ship within 48 hours. Some rugs have a 10–14 day lead time before shipping — this is noted on the individual product page for any style where it applies.
Rugs 8 × 10 and smaller ship via standard carrier. Rugs 9 × 12 and larger ship via freight carrier and carry an additional shipping charge, which is calculated and shown at checkout.
What is your return policy?
Returns are accepted within 30 days of delivery in original packaging. A return authorization is required — contact us before sending anything back. A 20% restocking fee applies. We provide and pay for the return shipping label.
Damaged goods are handled case by case. In some situations we may instruct you to keep or donate the item rather than ship it back.
